On Saturday, April 13, from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Austin Public Health (APH) is hosting It’s a Birthing Thang at the ACC Eastview Campus, African American Cultural Center in Austin, Texas. This event coincides with Black Maternal Health Week, which aims to improve outcomes for pregnant individuals, especially black mothers.

Dr. Desmar Walkes, the Austin-Travis County Health Authority, highlighted the importance of educating individuals on warning signs and available resources to prevent pregnancy-related deaths. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, hundreds of people die each year during pregnancy or after giving birth, with black women being three times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause compared to white women.

Austin Public Health is committed to addressing these disparities by amplifying black voices and fostering allyship to improve the quality of care, reduce implicit bias from providers, and manage chronic health conditions. Whether you are a parent-to-be, a birth professional or an ally, this event is for you.

Join APH in advancing better maternal, reproductive and birth outcomes for all pregnant individuals by attending It’s a Birthing Thang on Saturday April 13th at ACC Eastview Campus – African American Cultural Center in Austin Texas.
