The upcoming 2024 European elections in Italy will see a variety of candidates and parties competing for seats in the European Parliament. Notable names like Giorgia Meloni and Carlo Calenda will be on the ballot in all five constituencies, with Meloni leading in all of them. Calenda has handed over leadership in the north-west to former minister Elena Bonetti, while other leaders include Cateno De Luca and Laura Castelli on the ‘Freedom-South calls North’ list.

The election will require candidates to gather 15,000 signatures in each constituency unless they have already held a political position. So far, only Michele Santoro’s list has presented the required signatures. In addition to these candidates, notable names like Antonio Tajani, Matteo Renzi, Elly Schlein, Emma Bonino, and Silvio Berlusconi are also running for seats.

In the north-eastern constituency, the SVP will run in connection with FI, aiming to secure an MEP seat as they have done in the past. Italy will elect 76 out of 720 MEPs in June, with regions like the north-west, south, northeast, center and islands each contributing a different number of representatives. The current EU Commission led by Ursula Von der Leyen is supported by a majority coalition. The election will determine the European legislature until 2029.

Parties like ‘Forza Nuova’ and ‘Animal Rights Party-Italexit for Italy’ have been excluded for not meeting signature requirements or having a connection to an elected official. With a focus on hyperpersonalization and individual leaders
