In the small Italian island of Alicudi, located in the Aeolian Islands, visitors can take home a goat for free. However, they must catch the goat themselves. The island has an area of 5.2 sq km and is home to around 100 inhabitants. Originally, there was approximately one wild goat for every person on the island, but this year there are six goats for every person.

The goats were introduced to Alicudi about 20 years ago by a farmer who later released them. At first, they were a charming aspect of the island and even made it onto postcards. But over time, their numbers have exploded and they have become a nuisance to the residents. They now invade residential areas, enter houses, consume greenery in private gardens and public parks, and destroy green hedges.

To adopt a goat from the island, interested individuals must send an email request to the local authorities and pay a fee of 16 euros. The mayor’s office will accept applications until April 10th, after which potential “goat adopters” will have 15 days to catch and remove the goats from the island.
