The United States House of Representatives, under the leadership of Republican Representative Jim Jordan, is conducting an investigation into the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for its potential involvement in censorship cases linked to lawsuits against critics and journalists in Brazil. The House Judiciary Committee and the Select Subcommittee on the Instrumentation of the Federal Government, both led by Jim Jordan, are leading this investigation.

A document sent to FBI director Christopher Wray on Tuesday requested clarification on reports suggesting FBI collaboration in actions aimed at limiting freedom of expression in Brazil. The document, signed by Jim Jordan, described instances where the FBI may have cooperated with the Brazilian government to monitor and potentially censor individuals in the United States. Another case mentioned in the document involved the FBI collaborating with Ukrainian intelligence to flag social media accounts of US citizens.

The Committee is concerned about the FBI potentially helping foreign governments in censoring US residents, which raises questions about the agency’s involvement in censorship efforts. The document highlights the importance of freedom of expression as a fundamental aspect of democratic societies.

In response to these concerns, Jim Jordan has requested that the FBI provide documents and communications related to its interactions with Brazilian authorities by June 4th. The request includes documents concerning orders, demands or warrants from Brazilian courts regarding the suspension or removal of accounts on social media platforms.

This investigation is part of a larger effort to shed light on censorship issues in Brazil, particularly those affecting right-wing individuals. The Twitter Files Brasil reports have played a crucial role in uncovering these cases, prompting action from the US Congress. Journalist Michael Shellenberger emphasized the importance of exposing censorship in Brazil and praised the Committee’s efforts to hold the FBI accountable for its role.

The House Judiciary Committee and Select Subcommittee on Instrumentation of Federal Government will continue their investigation into any potential involvement by law enforcement agencies such as FBI with foreign governments seeking to censor US residents’ free speech rights under international law.
