Meta is taking steps to safeguard minors from blackmail involving intimate photos on Instagram. The social media giant has introduced a new function that automatically detects and blurs nude images received by minors in direct messages. This feature gives recipients the option to view the image or not, preventing them from being exposed to unwanted content.

In addition to blurring images, Meta will restrict interactions with accounts identified as potential sources of blackmail. These accounts will not be able to send private messages to minors, view their complete list of followers, or appear in search results. Young users will be warned if they come into contact with a potential blackmailer and directed to resources for assistance.

These measures will be tested in Central and Latin American countries starting in May before being rolled out globally in the coming months. The goal is to reduce the creation and sharing of intimate images and protect minors from potential harm. It’s part of Meta’s ongoing commitment to enhancing child protection measures on its platforms.
