Filtration systems are a vital component of many industrial processes, and their performance is crucial for the efficiency and safety of these processes. In recent years, there has been growing concern about the use of fluorochemicals in filtration materials due to their potential environmental impact. To address this issue, Ahlstrom has introduced innovative fluoro-free technologies into various industrial air filtration applications to help filter manufacturers develop long-lasting filtration products without the use of fluorochemicals.

These new filtration materials are particularly well-suited for applications such as gas turbine air intake, air pollution control, and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC). The materials offer water-repellent properties that enhance the durability and stability of the final filters, especially in wet conditions. In challenging environments like air pollution control applications, hydrophobic properties are crucial for maintaining optimal filtration performance.

For instance, in gas turbine applications, water repellency acts as a barrier against liquid water and dissolved salts entering the filter, thereby protecting the turbine from corrosion. Similarly, hydrophobic materials help conserve energy by reducing the increase in pressure drop during humid conditions in air pollution control applications.

Tamara Quatrano, vice president of R&D and Product Development for Filtration at Ahlstrom emphasizes the company’s commitment to innovation, safety, and sustainability. The introduction of these fluoro-free product portfolio represents a significant step towards helping customers transition away from fluorochemicals while maintaining high levels of performance requirements. Ahlstrom aims to offer alternative fluoro-free solutions that meet performance requirements paving the way for a cleaner, safer and more sustainable future in filtration. These new fluoro-free filtration materials are now available globally through Ahlstrom’s Trinitex® , CellTech ,and Glass production platforms.
