In 2021, the heirs of Diego Maradona were successful in stopping the auction of a trophy that was awarded to him after the 1986 World Cup. A French court had ordered the trophy to be placed in judicial possession after it was discovered that its ownership was disputed. The appeal court in Versailles overturned a previous decision that allowed the trophy’s auction to proceed, despite opposition from Maradona’s heirs.

The tribunal decided to sequester the trophy pending a final decision on the ownership dispute. Gilles Moreu, a lawyer for the heirs, announced that he will file a legal action to determine who is the rightful owner of the trophy. French judicial officials launched an investigation after receiving a complaint related to potentially stolen goods.

The Golden Ball trophy was awarded to Maradona in 1986 for being the best player of the tournament. It disappeared under uncertain circumstances, leading to rumors about its whereabouts. One theory suggests that it was stolen from a bank safe in Naples that was robbed by gangsters while Maradona was playing in Italy. Maradona’s heirs suspect that the trophy was taken from the bank and are determined to prove its ownership.
