The observance of National Donate Life Month is a time to raise awareness about the importance of organ, eye, and tissue donation. This year, Dignity Health is honoring the occasion by illuminating Mercy Medical Center in Redding with blue and green lights. The annual event takes place in April and aims to recognize those who have saved lives through their selfless act of donation, while also highlighting the critical need for more organ donors.

The demand for organ transplants continues to grow, with over 100,000 individuals currently on the national waiting list. In California alone, there are over 20,000 people awaiting organ transplants, while nearly 300 reside in Nevada. Unfortunately, every day, 17 people lose their lives while waiting for a transplant. Despite these challenges, organizations like Donor Network West continue to facilitate organ donations and help save lives.

In 2023 alone, Donor Network West helped facilitate the gifts of 473 organ donors, resulting in 1,358 transplanted organs and positively impacting the lives of 1,188 organ transplant recipients. Each donor has the potential to save up to eight lives and enhance the lives of over 75 individuals through tissue donation. By simply making a gift of life through organ or eye donation or by registering as a tissue donor on BeTheDonor.org/Nevada or BeTheDonor.org/California., individuals can make a significant impact on the lives of others and contribute to saving lives through this essential cause.

Dignity Health’s commitment to raising awareness about organ and tissue donation during National Donate Life Month serves as an inspiration to us all. Through their efforts and those of other organizations working tirelessly towards this cause, we can continue to make progress towards a future where no one waits for life-saving transplants or loses their life due to lack of access to these vital medical treatments.
