Iceland’s Foreign Minister, Bjarni Benediktsson, has been appointed as the country’s new Prime Minister. The previous Prime Minister, Katrin Jakobsdóttir, announced her resignation on Friday, leading to Benediktsson’s appointment. He comes from the conservative Independence Party and previously served as Minister of Finance in Jakobsdóttir’s cabinet.

The new government is set to begin work after a meeting of the Icelandic State Council. Jakobsdóttir, who has been Prime Minister since 2017, announced her resignation as she plans to run for the post of president. The current President of Iceland, Gudni Th. Johannesson, has decided not to run for re-election, with the presidential election scheduled for June 1st. The role of Iceland’s president is largely ceremonial.
