USA Hockey recently announced that John Hynes of the Minnesota Wild will be the coach for the 2024 U.S. men’s national team for the upcoming IIHF men’s world championship in Czechia. The event is set to take place from May 10-26 in Prague and Ostrava. Hynes, who has extensive experience at both the NHL and AHL levels, was last seen coaching the national team in 2019. Although his team fell short of making the playoffs this past season as head coach of the Wild, he brings a wealth of expertise to this new role.

Brett Peterson, who serves as general manager of the national team and is also a member of the Florida Panthers’ management team, expressed confidence in Hynes’ leadership skills. Peterson highlighted Hynes’ passion, energy, and extensive experience on the world stage as key strengths that will benefit the national team in their quest for gold. In fact, Hynes has a longstanding history with USA Hockey, having served as a head coach for the national team development program from 2003-2009. Additionally, he has personal success in collegiate hockey, competing in four NCAA Frozen Fours and securing a championship win in 1995.

Hynes’ coaching career began at Boston University where he played before moving on to professional hockey with various teams such as Nashville Predators and New Jersey Devils. His experience at these levels has given him an understanding of how to manage teams effectively and handle pressure situations which are crucial when it comes to international competition. With his wealth of knowledge and expertise combined with his passion for coaching, Hynes is an ideal candidate for leading the US Men’s National Team towards success at IIHF World Championship 2024
