Hue Central Hospital recently made history with three record-breaking organ transplant surgeries within 48 hours, successfully completing procedures for eight patients. The surgeries took place from April 2-4, and the patients are reported to be in stable condition post-transplant.

During this time, the hospital performed three trans-Vietnamese organ transplants, one autologous kidney transplant, and four blood-related kidney transplants from living donors. In one of the cases, Hue Central Hospital received a heart, liver, and kidney from a brain-dead donor at Vietnam-Sweden Uong Bi Hospital. This marked the first time the hospital received three organs at once in a trans-Vietnamese transplant. Additionally, the hospital set a record for the longest organ transport time, as the organs had to be transported over 800 km from Quang Ninh to Hue, taking more than 4 and a half hours.

Professor Dr. Pham Nhu Hiep, the hospital’s director, emphasized the significance of cross-Vietnam organ transplants and the determination to save patients’ lives despite geographical challenges. This successful series of surgeries adds to the growing number of organ transplant records in Vietnam, with 8,365 cases reported since 1992. However, experts highlight the need to better utilize organ donations from brain-dead donors as a significant number of potential donors are lost each year in traffic accidents.
