Huawei is looking to make a significant leap in the folding cell phone market once again with its upcoming tri-fold model. After launching the Huawei Mate X in 2019, the Chinese brand is aiming for technical superiority in the segment with a new design that features three folds.
A recent patent published by Huawei reveals that the upcoming smartphone will take on a “Z” shape when folded, with two different hinges allowing for up to a 10-inch screen and a tablet-like form factor. The device will feature three casings, two hinges, and a flexible screen, with the casings connected at the ends to the screen. The first and second hinges provide a secure connection between the components, allowing for smooth folding and unfolding. The unique aspect of the tri-fold design is that the screen connected to the second hinge can be folded out, creating a fully functional screen in the third part when the device is folded.
While no official confirmation has been provided by Huawei regarding the new model, Carlos Morales, Director of Public Relations for Huawei Devices in Latin America, emphasized the company’s commitment to innovation and offering cutting-edge equipment. He highlighted technical superiority of Huawei’s foldable devices and hinted at ongoing developments in materials, technologies, and applications.
Samsung, known for its innovation in folding technology, is also exploring the possibility of incorporating a tri-fold design in its Z Fold and Z Flip line. The South Korean company showcased a triple-screen smartphone at a recent technology event but has not confirmed its release yet. The introduction of tri-fold devices would represent a significant advancement in the folding cell phone market but challenges related to design complexity and weight remain to be addressed.
