In the spring of 2021, Anthony “Deuce” Williams, a three-star outside linebacker from Shadow Creek in Pearland, Texas, made a decision that would change the course of his college football career. After committing to the University of Texas just four months earlier, Williams decided to back off his commitment and explore other options.
After nearly two months of considering different schools, Williams finally made a decision: he would commit to the TCU Horned Frogs. The coaching staff at TCU was able to gain momentum following Williams’ decommitment from Texas and ultimately secured his commitment. With a total of 20 offers in his recruitment, Williams spoke with Rivals to explain his decision to commit to TCU.
One of the main reasons for Williams’ decision was the consistent recruitment efforts of Ken Wilson from TCU. He also cited his connection with the entire coaching staff as playing a significant role in his decision. During his visits to TCU, Williams had been impressed by the school’s excellent educational opportunities and its reputation as a great place to play college football.
While TCU plans to move him around different positions based on their offensive scheme, Williams mentioned that he could see himself playing more as a traditional linebacker as he gains weight. Moving just four hours north from his Houston-area home played a significant role in Williams’ decision. The proximity allowed him to stay close to family while still having access to competitive collegiate athletics through TCU.
The coaching staff’s early efforts to recruit him also helped solidify Williams’ commitment to TCU. This included head coach Sonny Dykes visiting him at home before heading out on tour with recruiting duties for several days later. Ken Wilson and Paul Gonzalez also visited shadow creek High School during this time period which helped build trust between them and Deuce.
Throughout the recruitment process, TCU emerged as the favorite option for securing Williams’ commitment due to persistence and genuine interest in him by their coaching staff which eventually swayed Deuce’s decision.
