In New York City, Donald Trump entered the court with his lawyers by his side. Dressed in his signature dark suit and red tie, he looked serious as he faced a historic trial that could determine his political future. As the first former president of the United States to face criminal prosecution, Trump is also running for president again in November.

In room 1530 of the Manhattan Supreme Court, Trump sat in the dock facing Judge Juan Merchan, who accused him of falsifying his company’s accounting records to hide a payment to porn actress Stormy Daniels during the 2016 campaign. If convicted, Trump could potentially face up to four years in prison. However, according to the US Constitution, he could still be elected and govern from prison if he were found guilty.

Before the trial began, Trump called it an “attack on the United States” and claimed it was political persecution. The jury selection process started with the judge reading the charges and addressing potential jurors. The trial will last for several weeks as jurors answer questions about their political affiliations and cultural interests to ensure a fair trial.

Despite facing multiple criminal cases, Trump’s followers remain loyal, believing the trials to be a “witch hunt.” However, President Joe Biden has been gaining ground in the polls. Trump’s trial could impact his campaign travel schedule as he must be present throughout the proceeding, which may reach a verdict before the presidential elections in November.
