The study measured the amount of greenery within a 300-meter radius of patients’ addresses and compared it with their dates of death or survival over a 14-year period. The results revealed that individuals living in a green environment had a 7% lower mortality risk in the 12 years following surgery compared to those living in less green environments. This beneficial relationship was more pronounced in women, who were older at the time of surgery compared to men.
The researchers concluded that exposure to a green environment is associated with better survival due to factors such as cleaner air, increased physical activity, a calmer atmosphere, and overall better quality of life. These findings are particularly relevant in Israel as they suggest that exposure to a green environment may aid in recovery from trauma.
