If you’re looking for a fun way to explore states of matter and solubility, then you’ll love this sensory experiment with Meteorologist Sarah Spivey! In this demonstration, we’ll be making oobleck – a non-Newtonian fluid that can exist both as a solid and a liquid depending on the amount of force used. To make your own oobleck, all you need is a large container, 2 cups of cornstarch, 1 cup of water, and some food dye (optional).

Here’s how to make your own oobleck:

1. Measure out 1/2 cup of water and add food dye to the water.

2. Place 1 cup of cornstarch in a large container.

3. Pour the colored water into the container with the cornstarch and mix using your hands (note: this may be messy, so have plenty of paper towels nearby and an apron to cover your clothes).

4. Try compressing the oobleck in your hands into a ball. Observe how it quickly “melts” into a liquid.

5. Store your oobleck in the fridge for later use or dispose of it in the trash after you’re done playing with it. Note: Do not pour large amounts of cornstarch down pipes as they can clog them.
