Dr. Joy Buolamwini is a renowned researcher, artist, and activist in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). She has made significant contributions to the study of facial recognition technology and has advised world leaders on preventing AI harms. Her work on AI auditing has had a profound impact on the industry and her “Gender Shades” paper is one of the most cited peer-reviewed AI ethics publications to date.

In addition to her research, Dr. Joy uses art as a medium to raise awareness about the societal impact of AI. Her work as the Poet of Code has been displayed across four continents and she has been featured in various reputable publications such as TIME, New York Times, Harvard Business Review, Rolling Stone, and The Atlantic. She is also the central figure in the Emmy-nominated documentary Coded Bias, which has reached over 100 million viewers.

Dr. Joy’s accomplishments include being a Rhodes Scholar and Fulbright fellow, as well as receiving multiple accolades such as the Technological Innovation Award from the Martin Luther King Jr. Center and the 2024 NAACP-Archewell Foundation Digital Civil Rights Award.
