Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, has assigned Sauli Niinistö, the President of Finland, to create a report for the European Union on how to improve its preparedness for security threats. The report will focus on enhancing Europe’s civil and defense preparedness while taking into account various security concerns such as natural disasters, disinformation, and hybrid threats.

Von der Leyen emphasized the need for increased security measures in light of Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, which shattered the belief that peace is permanent and Europe is adequately safeguarded. She praised Finland’s comprehensive civil defense strategy, highlighting its ability to prepare for emergencies with a focus on vital functions, basic care, and support for defense forces.

Niinistö expressed his commitment to strengthening European defense and emphasized the importance of Europe taking on more responsibility within NATO. He stressed the need for Europe to be strong to deter challenges and attacks, calling for increased readiness and resilience.

As a former President of Finland, Niinistö is dedicated to promoting a stronger European defense and ensuring peace through strength and preparedness. His report will be delivered next fall with the hope that it will inform the future composition and priorities of the European Commission.
