A 37-year-old male patient in Tien Giang, Vietnam tested positive for influenza A/H9, making him the country’s first case ever. The man, who resides in Tan Ly Dong commune, Chau Thanh district, had a fever and purchased medicine to treat it on March 10. However, his condition worsened and he was admitted to the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Ho Chi Minh City on March 16. The doctor diagnosed severe pneumonia suspected to be caused by a virus. Test results confirmed that he was positive for influenza A with gene segments similar to influenza A virus, type H9. He is currently undergoing active treatment.

The Ministry of Health has confirmed that there is no evidence of person-to-person transmission of the virus. Cases of close contact with the patient have been listed and their health is being monitored. Health authorities advise avoiding consumption of sick or dead poultry and limiting contact with wild animals, especially birds. In cases of flu-like symptoms, individuals should seek medical attention promptly.

Influenza A/H9 is caused by avian influenza virus and transmitted to humans through direct or indirect contact with infected birds or contaminated surfaces. There is no specific treatment or vaccine for the disease. The death rate from avian flu strains can be up to 50%.
