In a new podcast called “You’ll Never Beat Kyle Walker” on BBC Sounds, the 34-year-old shared his thoughts on his career and the room for improvement he still believes exists as a player. Despite having more than 80 England caps and winning numerous high-profile accomplishments, including the Champions League and captaining Manchester City to a Premier League title, Walker described himself as not being a “hyper-confident” player. He emphasized that he has always had to earn what he achieved in his career, with nothing simply handed to him.

Reflecting on his younger days when he was considered the best player on his team from nine to about 14 years old, Walker acknowledged that as others grew faster than him, he had to adapt and find different strengths. Even now, despite his accomplishments, Walker still doubts himself and believes there is potential for significant improvement in his game. When asked about when doubts creep in, he mentioned that once he is on the pitch and the game begins, those nerves disappear as he focuses on playing.

Walker also recognized the skills of his fellow full-backs, particularly praising Joao Cancelo for his technical abilities. When comparing himself to other full-backs, Walker acknowledged the strengths and weaknesses in each player’s game. While there are aspects of his own game that he wishes he had worked harder on, others might envy his pace and strength. Overall, Walker’s humility and dedication to improvement shine through in his reflections on his career and ongoing journey as a professional footballer.
