Fortum, a leading energy company, is set to invest in a new hydrogen test facility located near the Loviisa nuclear power plant in Finland. The facility will be operated by Satu Sipola, who oversees the P2X business at Fortum. Two different hydrogen production technologies will be tested in the pilot plant, including alkali technology and PEM technology.

Sipola explains that the purpose of the pilot project is to gather knowledge about hydrogen production technology, operation, maintenance, and safety. The facility’s two electrolyzers will provide valuable insights into the potential of both technologies for large-scale production. With a value of 17 million euros and financed entirely from Fortum’s research and development funds, construction is set to begin this summer with an expected operational date by 2025.

Fortum sees hydrogen as crucial for transitioning to cleaner energy sources and replacing fossil hydrocarbons. As part of its strategy, it is exploring potential investments in small modular nuclear reactors while conducting small-scale projects on hydrogen technology in Nordic countries. The pilot plant will allow Fortum to evaluate its role in the entire hydrogen value chain as a producer or partner in downstream activities.

Sipola emphasizes that understanding not only technical aspects of hydrogen production but also market dynamics is critical to Fortum’s success. Its strategy for hydrogen technology may evolve based on market conditions and emerging business opportunities after 2028. Ultimately, Fortum aims to position itself strategically in the growing market for clean hydrogen and its derivatives.

The new hydrogen test facility represents a significant investment from Fortum towards transitioning towards sustainable energy sources while maintaining its core business activities.
