Manhattan prosecutor accuses ex-president Trump of orchestrating a criminal plan to influence 2016 elections

The Manhattan District Attorney’s office has accused former President Donald Trump of orchestrating a criminal plan to influence the 2016 presidential elections. The trial, which is running concurrently with his attempt to return to the White House after the November 5th elections, is focused on allegations of accounting fraud and cover-up.

During the trial, prosecutor Matthew Colangelo stated that Trump orchestrated a criminal scheme to influence the election and lied in the accounting books to conceal it. The charges against Trump include 34 counts of accounting fraud related to a $130,000 payment made to former porn film actress Stormy Daniels to silence an alleged sexual encounter that occurred during the 2016 campaign.

The trial has lasted about six weeks, and jury members, whose names are being kept secret for security reasons, will have to deliver a unanimous verdict that will determine Trump’s future. If convicted, Trump could face up to four years in prison and potentially be stripped of his right to vote. This trial is viewed as an example of election interference and could have far-reaching consequences for the former president.

The prosecution aims to prove that Trump authorized or directed his lawyer Michael Cohen to make the payment to Daniels and cover it up as legal expenses. Testimony from former collaborators who are now enemies is expected during the trial. Trump has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing and claims he is being persecuted by a witch hunt. He also faces multiple other criminal cases, including allegations of trying to overturn his defeat in the 2020 election and mishandling confidential documents after leaving office.

In conclusion, this trial marks one of the most extraordinary cases in US history, with high stakes and potential far-reaching consequences for the former president.
