Military and veteran families often face financial and emotional challenges when seeking care at VA hospitals, which are located far away. The Fisher House is a national organization that offers free housing to family members who live more than 50 miles from the VA hospital where their loved one is being treated.

The Pittsburgh area has a Fisher House housing center next to the VA hospital in Oakland, which can accommodate 10 families at a time. The goal of the Fisher House is to provide families with a comfortable place to stay and alleviate some of the stress that comes with having a loved one in the hospital. Families who stay at the Fisher House save an average of $1,900 during their six-day stay.

To expand its services, the Fisher House plans to build a new facility in O’Hara Township, which is expected to open in 2026. This new facility will provide housing for even more families, including those who have relatives in nursing homes, hospice care, or rehab at the VA hospital. The cost to build a Fisher House is $9 million, and the organization is working to raise $3 million in funding.

The Fisher House seeks corporate sponsorships to help bridge the gap in funding for the new facility. They hope to continue providing support and housing for military and veteran families in need. With donations and community support, they can make a difference in the lives of those who sacrifice so much for our country.
