On Monday, Finland temporarily interrupted its electricity export to Estonia for a few hours due to the disconnection of the direct current connection Estlink 1. The repair of the Estlink 2 electric cable is still underway and will not be completed until the end of August. This interruption caused a complete interruption of electricity export from Finland to Estonia, which could have led to price imbalances between the regions if it had been broken for longer.

On the Finnish side, this problem would have resulted in a lowering effect on prices as Finland exports electricity to Estonia. However, excess electricity accumulated in the Finnish grid due to the interruption. Though sabotage was almost non-existent, this momentary disconnection did not have dramatic significance for Finland. At the time of disconnection, power transfer from Finland to Estonia was approximately 343 MW.

The temporary interruption of this vital energy infrastructure between Finland and Estonia highlights how important it is for both countries to maintain reliable connections. Repair work is currently underway and is expected to be completed by August’s end, ensuring that there are no more disruptions in future.
