Philadelphia’s Queen Village neighborhood is home to the famous 4th Street Deli. However, this historic deli was recently shut down after a food inspector discovered multiple issues during an inspection. The inspector found at least seven violations, some of which were repeated violations, that needed to be addressed.
The violations listed in the inspector’s report included mouse droppings on a deli slicer, evidence of rodent activity on prep tables and in corners, improperly stored food, and no protection on a window to keep out insects and rodents. Due to these concerns, the deli has been issued a cease operation order until the violations are addressed.
Founded in 1923, Famous 4th Street Deli is known for its oversized corned beef and pastrami sandwiches and is a popular spot for Philadelphia politicians on Election Day. The Jewish deli has been featured in movies such as “Philadelphia” and “In Her Shoes,” as well as on Food Network’s “The Rachel Ray Show.” In order to reopen to the public, the restaurant will need to correct the violations and pass a reinspection.
