Marvin B. Figueroa, a seasoned expert in Health and Human Services, will be the keynote speaker at the College of Public Health’s Degree Celebration on May 11 at Eagle Bank Arena. Figueroa, with his extensive experience working in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and Virginia’s Department of Health and Human Resources, will share insights with the next generation of leaders based on his time in these roles.

Prior to this event, Figueroa served as the Chief of Staff to United States Senator Laphonza Butler and as the Director of the Office of Intergovernmental and External Affairs at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. In these roles, he advised Secretary Xavier Becerra and collaborated with regional offices to engage with state and local governments on health and human services priorities.

In addition to his work at the federal level, Figueroa has also worked as Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Resources in Governor Ralph S. Northam’s administration in Virginia. During his time in this role, he managed a consortium of 12 health and social services agencies that impacted many Virginians. His contributions to the 2020 Virginia General Assembly legislative session led to the passage of legislation that advanced healthcare, criminal justice, and equity efforts in the state.

Figueroa also has experience working as a Senior Advisor to Senator Mark R. Warner in the United States Senate, where he provided guidance on healthcare-related issues. A native of La Ceiba, Honduras, Figueroa holds a Master’s degree from Harvard University
