The former president of Bolivia, Evo Morales, has issued a warning to his party about the potential for unrest in the country if his presidential candidacy for the 2025 elections is disqualified. In an interview with the EFE agency, Morales stated that he believes that mass action is necessary to win this struggle and that any resulting turmoil would be the responsibility of the government.

Morales’ candidacy was thrown into question after a ruling by the Constitutional Court last year which stated that indefinite reelection is not a human right and can only be applied once, continuously or discontinuously. Despite belonging to the same party as current President Luis Arce, Morales maintains that he is legally and constitutionally enabled to be a candidate, as confirmed by consultations with national and international experts.

Tensions between Morales and Arce were evident at the anniversary event of their party last year, with Morales questioning Arce’s achievements and advocating for pluralism of ideas within MAS. The rift within the party extends to the legality of Congress which re-elected Morales as the sole candidate for 2025 elections. Pro-government sectors have called for a new Congress.
