The European Union is marking this week as Mental Health Week, with a theme of ‘co-creation’ highlighting the importance of collaboration in developing and implementing policies that promote positive mental health.

Numerous individuals are grappling with mental health issues, ranging from teenagers who are addicted to screens and social media to elderly people experiencing isolation. Factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the Russian war in Ukraine, climate change, rising energy costs, and the cost of living have all had long-term impacts on people’s mental well-being.

To address these challenges, the EU launched a comprehensive approach to mental health in June 2023. The initiative aims to break down stigma surrounding mental health and promote well-being. Key initiatives include early interventions and support, developing EU guidance on stigma and discrimination, investing €11 million from the EU4Health program to address gaps, and training healthcare professionals to provide better mental health care. Additionally, €10 million has been allocated to support vulnerable groups like children and refugees.

The EU recognizes that mental health issues in children and young people can cost billions of euros annually (estimated at €50 billion). By fostering collaboration and breaking down silos, the EU hopes to achieve better mental health for all. Resources for Mental Health Week include factsheets on the EU’s approach to mental health, statements from Commissioner Kyriakides, guidelines for policymakers and educators, as well as new initiatives aimed at achieving this goal.

In conclusion, European Mental Health Week highlights the need for a collaborative approach towards promoting positive mental health for all individuals. With resources available online through factsheets and other tools provided by the EU commissioner responsible for public health
