European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the EU’s commitment to taking tough measures to protect its economy and security, particularly in light of strained trade relations with China. During trilateral talks in Paris with Chinese President Xi Jinping and French President Emmanuel Macron, she stated that a fair-playing China would benefit everyone. Von der Leyen underscored the EU’s determination to make difficult decisions to safeguard its economy and security, noting the need to defend companies and economies.
Von der Leyen pointed out concerns surrounding significant imbalances, particularly highlighting Chinese subsidies for electric cars and steel that were saturating the European market. Additionally, she mentioned China’s substantial support for its manufacturing sector, leading to surplus production that could not be absorbed globally. Moreover, Von der Leyen criticized China for not providing fair access to its market for EU companies. While expressing optimism for potential progress in talks, she also issued a warning that the EU was prepared to fully utilize trade defence instruments if necessary, emphasizing the EU’s rejection of market-distorting practices.
French President Macron had previously urged Chinese President Xi to adhere to fair global trade rules during his state visit to France, emphasizing the importance of balanced EU-China relations for the future of the continent. The talks in Paris provided an opportunity for both sides to discuss their differences and work towards finding solutions that benefit all parties involved. While there is still much work to be done, it is clear that both Europe and China are committed to working together towards a more fair and balanced global trade system.
