The European Commission, led by Ursula von der Leyen, is facing scrutiny in two separate cases: Piepergate and Pfizergate. In January 31st, Markus Pieper, a German MEP from the CDU (EPP), was appointed as the EU envoy for SMEs with a salary of 17 thousand euros. However, his impartiality has been questioned by several commissioners and MEPs who raised concerns about the transparency and fairness of the selection process. They called for a discussion within the College of Commissioners.
On March 27th, the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy Josep Borrell, along with three commissioners Thierry Breton, Paolo Gentiloni, and Nicolas Schmit requested a discussion on the appointment as soon as possible. The concerns were initially raised by MEPs from various political groups who questioned whether political affiliation played a role in Pieper’s selection over other candidates who had better ratings. German Green MEP Daniel Freund has criticized the Commission for not responding to the questions raised about the appointment and has called for the nomination to be canceled and a new procedure to be initiated.
The issue will be debated in the European Parliament in Brussels next week, where von der Leyen is expected to participate. The President’s spokesperson has expressed confidence that the appointment was made in accordance with relevant procedures. Markus Pieper has not yet taken on his new role, and the start date for his contract has not been determined.
