Ecuador’s police assault on Mexico’s embassy in Quito, which led to the arrest of former Ecuadorian vice president Jorge Glas, has resulted in a diplomatic crisis between the two countries. The Mexican government has broken diplomatic relations with Ecuador, citing a violation of international law and Mexican sovereignty.

Mexico had demanded guarantees from Ecuador for the safe departure of its diplomatic staff. Images showed armed Ecuadorian police at the embassy and the removal of the Mexican flag from the building. The Mexican government expressed outrage at what it described as a brutal incursion and announced plans to file a complaint with the International Court of Justice.

The situation escalated after Mexico granted asylum to Glas, resulting in a tense standoff at the embassy. Other left-leaning countries have condemned the incident, viewing it as a violation of diplomatic norms.

The crisis stemmed from comments made by López Obrador about violence during Ecuador’s presidential campaign and its fallout. The expulsion of Mexico’s ambassador and the granting of asylum to Glas exacerbated tensions between the two countries, ultimately leading to an arrest warrant for Glas and a diplomatic rupture between Mexico and Ecuador.

Several countries have expressed solidarity with Mexico and condemned Ecuador for its actions. Rafael Correa, former President of Ecuador, criticized Glass’ treatment during his detention. The situation remains tense as both countries face potential diplomatic repercussions.
