On Monday, April 8 from 2:30-3:15 p.m., the Belfast Free Library and Friends of Sears Island are hosting a community viewing celebration for the upcoming solar eclipse. The event will be held in the Abbott Room at the library, where NASA videos, refreshments, and eclipse viewing glasses will be available.

On Tuesday, April 2 from 3:30-4:30 p.m., Friends of Sears Island and the Belfast Free Library are cosponsoring a Science Squad afterschool program for kids focused on the upcoming April 8 eclipse. Children will learn about the science of eclipses through videos, stories, and hands-on activities like making a solar viewing box, which allows safe indirect viewing of the eclipse with your back to the sun. The library will provide free eclipse glasses for participants, with a limit of one per person or four per family.

This free program is for children ages 5-12 and an accompanying adult. Pre-registration is required as space is limited. To sign up, email outreach@friendsofsearsisland.org. Registration is confirmed upon receiving an email confirmation. The event is part of Friends of Sears Island’s “Science Squad” initiative, a place-based after-school program that engages children as scientists, explorers, and environmental stewards. Science Squad is sponsored by First National Bank.
