Bülent Temel, an economist from UTSA in San Antonio, predicts that eclipse tourism will bring significant revenue to Texas. The professor has estimated that the state’s economy will benefit from between $150 million and $603 million as visitors flock to the Hill Country to witness the celestial event. Temel has dubbed this event “the most profitable 22 minutes in Texas history,” emphasizing the economic stimulation it will bring to the state.

Out of all 15 states in the path of totality, Texas is expected to receive the most significant economic benefits due to its lengthy path of totality and its coverage of populous areas like San Antonio, Austin, and Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. Temel’s estimates are based on the economic impact of the 2017 total eclipse on South Carolina and Nebraska, which saw substantial revenue from lodging, travel, and food expenses.

According to Temel, spending during the eclipse will primarily occur in three main areas: lodging, travel, and food. He estimates that each visitor will spend around $299 during their eclipse experience. This influx of spending is poised to have a considerable impact on the state’s economy overall. With such high spending expectations for eclipse tourism, it’s no wonder that Texas is looking forward to this event with anticipation!
