Dubai International Airport has set a new milestone in its aviation history with its best quarterly performance to date this year. This achievement underscores the airport’s position as a leading global aviation hub, driving Dubai’s economic growth and enhancing its status as a top international tourist destination.

In the first quarter of 2021, Dubai International Airport saw a significant increase in passenger numbers, reaching 23 million passengers, an impressive 8.4% rise from the same period last year. January had the highest passenger volume, with 7.9 million passengers passing through. The airport’s appeal in key markets contributed to Dubai’s reputation as a global destination for tourism and trade.

Dubai Airports CEO, Paul Griffiths, highlighted the continued growth of the airport, citing its expanding global network that now includes 256 destinations served by 90 international airlines such as Emirates Airlines and Flydubai. Griffiths emphasized the importance of maintaining growth momentum and enhancing the overall airport experience for all guests through close collaboration with partners and stakeholders.

With positive indicators in the second quarter and optimistic expectations for the year ahead, Dubai Airport is on track to surpass its previous annual passenger traffic record of 89.1 million passengers in 2018, aiming to welcome 91 million guests in total this year. The aviation sector plays a vital role in Dubai’s economy, contributing to a 3.3% increase in GDP valued at approximately AED307.9 billion ($85 billion).

Top destinations for passenger numbers included India, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, Pakistan, Russia, Germany and London maintained its status as major city destination followed by Riyadh Jeddah and Mumbai respectively . Total air traffic saw an impressive annual increase of 8.3%, with a seat occupancy rate of 79%. The baggage handling system processed 26.8 million bags efficiently showcasing Dubai International Airport’s operational excellence in providing seamless travel experiences for passengers.

The airport continues to be a critical contributor to Dubai’s economic growth and tourism industry while also serving as an essential gateway for trade between various countries worldwide.
