Digital Realty, a leading global provider of cloud and carrier-neutral data center solutions, has announced a partnership with Schneider Electric to implement circular economy initiatives at its Paris 5 (PAR5) data center. The collaboration aims to extend the lifespan of critical systems at PAR5, including Schneider Electric’s Low Voltage (LV) and Medium-Voltage (MV) electrical equipment, switchgear, and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS).

The initiative involves reusing essential components of the electrical infrastructure at PAR5 and introducing new programs for recycling, refurbishing, and repurposing equipment to minimize electronic waste and reduce emissions. By moving away from the use of harmful Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) like SF6, the project promotes sustainability and circular economy principles. A specific focus is placed on assessing and enhancing the lifecycle of VRLA UPS batteries through battery rejuvenation assessments.

Ultimately, the goal is to develop a roadmap that can be replicated, implemented, and expanded across all Digital Realty sites in Europe. Over the next 3-5 years, the circularity project is anticipated to result in significant savings of embodied carbon within the LV, MV, and UPS equipment at Digital Realty. Replacing outdated SM6 systems and recycling SF6 gas will contribute to reducing scope 3 emissions while extending equipment lifespan and enhancing the company’s environmental impact.

In its initial stages, the circularity project has already achieved 3.7 tons of CO2 savings by upgrading, refurbishing, and replacing UPS equipment. By adopting innovative solutions like Schneider Electric’s SF6-free MV switchgear, such as SM AirSeT which utilizes air and vacuum technology, Digital Realty anticipates further emissions reductions, increased efficiency
