The regional court of the autonomous region of Madrid has rejected the objection by the public prosecutor’s office against the initiation of an investigation into Prime Minister Sánchez’s wife, Begoña Gómez, on suspicion of influence peddling and corruption in the economy. This decision comes after a Madrid judge ruled in mid-April to launch an investigation into Gómez based on allegations made by “Manos Limpias” (Clean Hands), an organization that accuses her of using her position to help obtain public contracts.

Despite facing corruption charges, Sánchez denied any wrongdoing and even threatened to resign from his position as Prime Minister if evidence was found against his wife. However, after a period of reflection where he canceled all public appearances, Sánchez ultimately decided to remain in office.

While both the public prosecutor’s office and the UCO (police unit responsible for corruption crimes) conducted their own investigations into Gómez, no evidence of illegal actions was found. The complaint made by “Manos Limpias” was based solely on media reports rather than concrete evidence.

The legal case involving Gómez is just one aspect of a larger issue surrounding corruption in Spain. As such, it is important for authorities to continue their efforts to combat corruption and ensure that those who engage in corrupt practices are held accountable.
