Virginia Rettig, the manager of the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, is excited to present at Science Saturday on April 13th at 11 a.m. This event, hosted by the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences on Zoom, will focus on new techniques for marsh restoration and ways to help migratory birds in one’s own backyard.

Rettig has a passion for creating wildlife habitats in her garden and exploring natural areas, and she brings her expertise to this event as a presenter. She holds a bachelor’s degree in environmental and forest biology from the College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse, N.Y., and a master’s degree in wildlife biology from Louisiana State University. Her focus at Louisiana State University was on the use of agricultural fields by shorebirds, but she now manages the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge in New Jersey.

Before moving to New Jersey, Rettig spent two years as an assistant refuge supervisor in the regional office in Hadley, Mass., after working for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Lafayette, La., for 15 years. In addition to her work with wildlife conservation efforts, Rettig also volunteers with teachers and STEM programs through the American Association of University Women to support education initiatives in South Jersey.

All Science Saturdays are free to attend, with registration available online through the Long Beach Island Foundation website or by subscribing to LBIF emails. Don’t miss out on this exciting opportunity to learn about new techniques for marsh restoration and ways to help migratory birds from your own backyard!
