In a recent statement, Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan expressed his criticism towards the BJP’s claims about the extraordinary economic growth under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. Chavan argued that if the BJP-led government had maintained the economic growth achieved during the UPA government under PM Manmohan Singh’s tenure, India would now be the world’s third largest economy. He pointed out that despite Modi’s promises to bring India to this rank, the country currently ranks as the fifth largest economy.
Chavan accused Modi of hindering economic growth through his flawed economic policies such as demonetisation, poor implementation of GST and sudden imposition of lockdown during the pandemic. He also criticized Modi for failing to fulfill his election promises, such as bringing back illicitly stashed money from overseas banks and creating two crore jobs annually. Moreover, Chavan highlighted how farmer incomes have declined due to government policies that dragged down prices of agricultural produce and accused the BJP of raising funds through nefarious means as shown by revelations on electoral bonds.
Overall, Chavan’s comments portrayed a lack of faith in the BJP’s claims and promises about India’s economic growth under Modi’s leadership. He emphasized on how Modi’s policies have negatively impacted economic growth and failed to meet commitments made to the public.
