The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) has recently undergone a major organizational restructure, with a focus on frontier and basic research capabilities. As China continues to push for innovation and technological breakthroughs, the CAS has set up new bureaus focusing on these areas, replacing previous departments that also handled education, science promotion, and dissemination.

With a goal of countering hi-tech containment by the US and powering economic growth through technology and high-value added manufacturing, China is placing increased emphasis on original innovation. The new bureaus will concentrate on research areas such as life sciences, atmospheric and oceanic sciences, and interdisciplinary studies while overseeing major scientific research programs.

The frontier sciences and basic research bureau will lead disciplines like mathematics, astronomy, life sciences, and fundamental interdisciplinary frontiers. In response to pressure to narrow the tech gap with advanced economies, Chinese leaders are urging efforts to seek breakthroughs in original innovation and promote “disruptive innovation” with the potential to transform industry and human life.

Despite challenges such as original innovation being the weakest link in China’s push to become a tech superpower, efforts are being made at both the national and regional levels to boost innovation in sectors like artificial intelligence and the drone-driven “low-altitude economy.” Quantum and life sciences have been identified as emerging industries for future growth, demonstrating the country’s commitment to technological advancement and economic development.
