China’s Diplomats Celebrate ‘Told-You-So’ Moment as America Faces Criticism for Hypocrisy

China’s top diplomats, technocrats, trade envoys and foreign policy scholars are reveling in a ‘told-you-so’ moment. These voices have long been advocating for foreign governments, especially those with strong ties to America, to prioritize national interests over democratic values and other abstract principles. And now, they argue, current events are proving them right.

According to China’s perspective, America is being revealed as a hypocritical nation that is quick to condemn China and Russia for violating international law and abusing human rights while at the same time supplying weapons that are used to kill civilians in Gaza. Beijing believes that the recent conflict between Russia and Ukraine has united the West, but the conflict between Israel and Hamas has once again divided it. It is also forecasted that if Donald Trump were to be re-elected, his allies would find themselves isolated on the global stage yet again as his “America First” policy takes precedence.

In light of these circumstances, wise foreign governments are advised to refrain from criticizing other political systems or regimes and instead focus on improving the safety and prosperity of their own citizens. This advice is especially relevant in relations with China. Chinese officials and scholars suggest that foreign leaders should not be swayed by American attempts to form ideological blocs or defense alliances that are intended to contain China’s growing influence. Rather, they recommend that states focus on forging bilateral agreements and mutually beneficial partnerships with Chinese economic partners.
