Chancellor Olaf Scholz is set to return to Brandenburg an der Havel in the state of Brandenburg on Monday evening for his second Chancellor Talks event of the year. During the 90-minute event, Scholz will engage with 150 citizens who will have the opportunity to ask him questions. The Chancellor will begin by sharing some casual conversation about his adopted home of Potsdam before diving into a range of topics, including the debt brake, US elections, Ukrainian war refugees, affordable housing, and protecting democracy against right-wing extremism.

Scholz’s views on various issues were revealed during the event. He expressed support for the debt brake and emphasized the need for fiscal responsibility. He also hinted at possible reforms to the rule laid down in the Basic Law. Regarding US elections, Scholz expressed confidence in Joe Biden’s ability to stand up to Donald Trump while acknowledging that there may be implications if Trump were re-elected.

The Chancellor defended Germany’s decision to provide financial support to Ukrainian war refugees. He argued that it was necessary given ongoing conflict with Russia. He encouraged Ukrainian refugees to seek employment opportunities in Germany.

Scholz also highlighted the importance of creating affordable housing and supported efforts to simplify building laws and reduce building costs as essential steps towards addressing Germany’s housing crisis.

Finally, Scholz emphasized protecting democracy against right-wing extremism and condemned radical right-wing ideologies such as “remigration.” He stressed that standing up against extremist positions was crucial for ensuring prosperity in Germany.
