The World Refugee Day celebration was held on June 27, 2024, at the Grow North Farm in Anchorage’s Mountain View neighborhood. People from all over the world gathered to celebrate and honor the journeys of refugees who have resettled in Alaska. Hosted annually by Catholic Social Services, the event aims to be both fun and educational.

Catholic Social Services Alaska state refugee coordinator Issa Spatrisano explained that the event provides a local platform to recognize and celebrate the diverse individuals who have resettled in Alaska. In recent years, Alaska has seen an increase in refugee arrivals, with about 500 newcomers last year, largely as a result of conflict in Ukraine. This is a significant increase from the usual average of around 150 arrivals per year.

During the celebration, attendees were treated to cultural performances, including singing, bandura playing, and traditional dances. Fresh produce from the Grow North Farm was also available for purchase. The event highlighted the resilience and talents of refugees from countries such as Bhutan, Ukraine, and Congo Democratic Republic.

Children were actively involved in the festivities, participating in activities like blowing bubbles and singing on stage. The event served as a reminder of the strength and diversity that refugees bring to Alaskan communities.

The celebration is an opportunity for people to come together to learn more about refugees’ experiences and achievements while also providing support for those who are still facing challenges in their new home. It’s an opportunity for people to connect with one another and recognize that even though they come from different backgrounds, they share common goals: building a better future for themselves and their families.

Catholic Social Services has been hosting this event every year since it began its refugee program in Alaska over 40 years ago. They continue to provide support services for refugees as they integrate into society while promoting understanding and acceptance among Alaskans.

Overall, it was an inspiring day at Grow North Farm where people came together to celebrate refugees’ accomplishments while promoting empathy and compassion towards those who have been forced to flee their homeland due to war or persecution.
