The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) recently participated in a significant international symposium held in the Caribbean. The symposium aimed to bring together scientists from diverse backgrounds and locations to discuss the future of science and technology in the region. It also highlighted the talents of local scientists as well as those within the Caribbean diaspora.

The event attracted a diverse group of experts, including physicists, computer scientists, astronomers, technologists, entrepreneurs, policy-makers, conservationists, and leaders. Through various events, discussions, and collaborations, participants sought to envision the future of science and technology in the Caribbean. The symposium facilitated discussions, partnerships, and networking opportunities to bridge gaps between Caribbean scientists, students, and the broader scientific community.

One of the key goals of the symposium was to establish a central hub for science in the Caribbean. By fostering collaboration between scholars in the region and around the globe, it aimed to elevate all participants together. Professor Shirin Haque from UWI played a vital role in organizing the event. Haque received her Ph.D. at UWI and Virginia University under an IDB fellowship before establishing a long-standing partnership with NRAO through programs like RADIAL program and NINE program that provide access and training in radio astronomy to underrepresented individuals.

Several UWI undergraduates have participated in RADIAL program this year with three joining this year’s symposium led by Trinidadian diaspora Professor Stephon Alexander of Brown University Everard Findlay of EIME Corp USA local chair Professor Shirin Haque supported by Simons Foundation to UWI.
