On April 25th, Can Tho Central General Hospital successfully performed the first kidney transplant in the Southwest region after four years of preparation. The hospital announced the successful surgery on May 9th, after the patient’s health stabilized.

The recipient of the kidney transplant is a 34-year-old male teacher from Ben Tre who had been suffering from chronic kidney failure for six years and was undergoing medical treatment. The donor was the patient’s brother.

Two years ago, the patient visited Can Tho Central General Hospital with end-stage chronic kidney failure and was prescribed hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. He was placed on the kidney transplant waiting list earlier this year after the hospital was recognized by the Ministry of Health for its expertise in kidney transplants.

The first kidney transplant in the Southwest region was performed by doctors at Can Tho Central General Hospital with support from Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City. Over 20 doctors and nurses worked together to successfully remove, wash, and transplant the kidney.

After a 5-hour surgery, the patient’s new kidney started functioning as urine appeared when the ureter was connected. The patient’s health stabilized after two weeks of recovery, and he is expected to be discharged from the hospital on May 9th. The donor’s health also recovered well after
