Business owners on the South Side came together on this Earth Day to clean up the area. They met at South Eighth and Mary Street, picked up brooms and dust pans, and then headed to East Carson Street to begin cleaning. Although there are people hired to clean up the area regularly, it is important for everyone to take responsibility for keeping the community clean. Christie Miller, owner of Twelve Whiskey BBQ, emphasized the importance of not littering and cleaning up after themselves.

During a conversation with KDKA-TV’s Mamie Bah, the business owners expressed that the cleanup efforts were not just about cleaning up but also about changing the narrative about the South Side. James Hoffmann, the owner of Mario’s South Side Saloon, mentioned that there is a false narrative about the area and believes that showing a positive message through community cleanups can help shift that perception. He emphasized that everyone in the community is in it together, and working towards a common goal of keeping the area clean and inviting for all.

The business owners believe that by coming together and taking action to keep their community clean, they can showcase a different side of the South Side than what is often portrayed in media. They hope that their efforts will inspire others in the community to join them in creating a positive change. The cleanup efforts were well received by local residents who appreciate seeing their neighborhood being cared for by those who call it home.
