During Mental Health Awareness Month in May, leaders at UAB are highlighting the importance of interpersonal relationships. These relationships are the bonds between two individuals that can provide emotional support, decrease stress levels and help navigate life’s challenges.

Director of UAB’s Community Counseling Clinic, Dr. Yusen Zhai, notes that college students may find it challenging to maintain these relationships during the summer when they are away from campus and their peers. He encourages students to not be afraid to build new relationships as expanding their social network can provide additional social support.

Dr. Zhai emphasizes the importance of periodically checking in with friends while away from campus to better foster relationships. This simple act can help maintain connections and support each other’s mental well-being. By staying connected and building new relationships, individuals can continue to receive the emotional support they need to navigate life’s difficulties.
