Since the Bletchley Park summit, small teams on both sides have been actively communicating through hundreds of calls and emails. Britain has been providing advice on establishing the US institute while working on a formal cooperation deal. In March, the two camps met face-to-face during a quiet room discussion at a G7 gathering in Verona. The negotiations were further progressed with multiple calls between Ms. Donelan and Gina Raimondo, the US commerce secretary, leading up to the signing of the deal this week. The private high-five shared by the two officials after the signing was captured on camera.

Ms. Donelan proudly stated that Britain was at the forefront of AI technology while criticizing the EU for passing regulations hastily without a full understanding of the technology and its associated risks. She believes that Britain’s approach will allow for influencing global standards and strategies in AI development.

The Labour Party expressed support for collaborating with the US on AI safety and economic opportunities, highlighting the importance of regulations that promote innovation and growth. However, they also criticized the government for lacking a well-defined plan for domestic safeguards in AI technology.

Despite this criticism, Peter Kyle, the shadow science secretary, recently met with AI companies and officials from the US commerce department to discuss further cooperation in the field.

In conclusion, while there may be differences in opinions regarding AI regulation and safeguards within both countries, collaboration between Britain and America is essential for shaping global standards and strategies in AI development.
