The Indian Ocean archipelago of the Maldives has announced a ban on Israeli passport holders from entering their country, according to the president’s office. This decision was made by Mohamed Muizzu, the head of state, who did not specify a date for when the ban will take effect. The move comes as a show of solidarity with Palestine and is seen as a response to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

The Maldives had previously lifted a ban on Israeli tourists in the early 1990s and attempted to normalize relations with Israel in 2010. However, this effort fell through after the overthrow of President Mohamed Nasheed in 2012 due to opposition from local parties and allies of the government. The decision to ban Israelis was made in protest against the war in Gaza, which began after an attack by Hamas on Israel.

As a result of the ban, only 528 Israelis visited the Maldives in the first four months of this year. Israeli authorities have advised citizens against visiting and recommended that those already there consider leaving due to potential difficulties they may face if they need assistance while staying there.

The Maldives is known for its stunning white sand beaches and turquoise lagoons. Despite this new announcement, many tourists are still visiting other countries in the region that allow Israeli visitors. However, some experts predict that tourism may suffer as tensions remain high between Israel and its neighbors.

The conflict in Gaza has been ongoing since 2007 when Hamas took control of Gaza Strip from Fatah party following a violent coup d’état. Since then, several ceasefire agreements have been signed but not implemented or violated by both sides.

In conclusion, this decision by President Muizzu reflects his stance on continuing violence in Gaza and sends a strong message that support for Palestine is unwavering among Maldivians citizens.
