Paris is set to host the 2024 Olympics, a first for the city since 1924. The International Olympic Committee made this announcement in 2017 as part of a double award with Los Angeles, which will host the event in 2028. As preparation begins, many iconic Parisian landmarks are set to serve as competition venues for the games.

One of the most significant changes for the 2024 Olympics is the introduction of prize money for track and field athletes. World Athletics announced that gold medalists in track and field events at the Paris Olympics will receive $50,000 each. Relay teams will also be awarded $50,000, which will be split between team members. This marks a major milestone for the sport, as it will be the first time that athletes at the Olympics will receive prize money for their achievements.

Sebastian Coe, president of World Athletics, emphasized the importance of recognizing the hard work and dedication of athletes who compete at the highest level of the sport. The prize money allocated for gold medalists will come from World Athletics’ revenue share allocation received from every four years from International Olympic Committee (IOC). Athletes must pass anti-doping procedures before they can receive their prize money.

In contrast to this move by World Athletics to provide prize money for Olympic gold medalists, US Olympic and Paralympic Committee awards $37,500 to gold medalists in individual events while silver medalists get $22,500 and bronze medalists get $15,
