The Brazilian government has condemned the invasion of the Mexican Embassy in Quito by Ecuadorian police forces. In a statement released Saturday morning, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed strong disapproval of the violation of diplomatic conventions by the embassy invasion. President Lula da Silva also expressed his support for Mexico on social media, while remaining silent about Venezuela’s annexation of Essequibo region in Guyana.

Brazil’s quick response to the events in Ecuador contrasts with its silence on Maduro’s actions, which went against a diplomatic agreement made at the end of last year. Despite not commenting on Maduro’s actions directly, Brazil’s commitment to peace in the region was reaffirmed by Lula’s international affairs advisor. The creation of “Guiana Essequiba” following a unilateral referendum led by Maduro adds to the long-standing dispute between Venezuela and Guyana over the resource-rich region. The importance of dialogue and diplomatic negotiations was emphasized as a way to resolve the conflict peacefully.
